Portsmouth, NH – A legislator and energy advocate, a business leader and philanthropist, and an environmental official and educator were presented Clean Air-Cool Planet’s Climate Champion Award in a ceremony here last night.
David Borden, a state representative from New Castle, Joanne Lamprey of Rye, president of Lamprey Brothers, an oil and HVAC company, and Christopher Skoglund of Durham, a transportation and air quality planner with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, received the awards at the kick-off event for Clean Air-Cool Planet’s tenth anniversary.
The leading science-based nonprofit organization working exclusively to solve the global warming problem Clean Air-Cool Planet (CA-CP), began work in 2000, providing hands-on assistance to companies, campuses, communities and science centers, from it’s Portsmouth the New Canaan, CT offices, while developing and promoting economically efficient and innovative federal climate policies through its Washington, DC office.
“We opened our headquarters here ten years ago,” said CA-CP President and CEO Adam Markham, “and we wanted to begin our celebration of ten years of action by honoring local actors who have done great things to help solve the global warming problem.”
Borden is a leader in his community and in the state on several environmental fronts. As a state legislator, he sponsored legislation to promote the use of biodiesel in New Hampshire, authored and sponsored bills to allow towns to establish local energy commissions and municipal financing for energy efficiency and renewable energy. He chairs the Municipal Energy Working Group of the NH Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Energy Board.
Joanne Lamprey has a personal and professional commitment to reducing greenhouse gases. As president of Lamprey Brothers, she has redirected the company toward promoting and providing the means to use more sustainable energy practices. As a citizen, she made possible the creation of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation’s Climate Action Fund, which has supported data collection for the NH Climate Action Plan Task Force, which created the state’s climate action plan. The Fund also supported outreach programs to help homeowners save energy and money through the New England Carbon Challenge.
Skoglund, while still a master’s degree candidate at UNH, became interested and involved in engaging entire communities to raise awareness of the causes and solutions to climate change and to help people adopt sustainable behaviors. In his current capacity in the Air Resources Division at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, Skoglund was instrumental in assisting the Governor’s Climate Change Task Force and in developing the state’s Climate Action Plan.
Clean Air-Cool Planet’s Climate Champion Award is presented annually to individuals and organizations for actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the threat of global warming. Since 2003, the award has been given to 27 individuals, campuses, communities, corporations, organizations and groups, including Janice Crawford, executive director of the Mt. Washington Valley chamber; Hannaford Supermarkets; the Town of Temple, NH; The Timberland Company; and The University of New Hampshire.
