Situations like this one, invite legislators to propose consumer protection laws which often result in excessive paper work for heating oil companies which only adds to the cost of heating oil. Dos and Don’ts of choosing a heating oil dealer:
- DO: Ask around – talk to your friends and neighbors about who they choose and ask if they are happy with their delivery and service.
- DO: Look at a heating company’s track record before buying.
- DO: Make sure that the heating company you choose is represented by the industry (i.e. Oil Heat Council of New Hampshire).
- DO: Know what you want in a heating oil company – such as full service, automatic delivery and 24/7 availability.
- DON’T: Do not go for price alone, because if it’s too good to be true – it probably is.
