| 12/02/2008... | Newmarket, NH – Lego League is an after-school program in which children learn about science and technology, and how these fields can be used to impact their community and the world around them. In Newmarket Elementary School, six nine- and ten-year-old children stay after school twice a week to learn, build and have fun.
Beth Frede, coach of Newmarket's Lego League group says, “This year the kids have to come up with a concept that shows how they'll help save the environment. We needed speakers to come talk to the kids- speakers who understand the importance of 'green energy', and environmentally-friendly technology. Lamprey Brothers is a company that is trying to get people off oil; we knew they'd be perfect to come speak to our group."
Visiting the Lego League group for a second year, Amanda Bacon from Lamprey Brothers had the kids join in an interactive Jeopardy-like game in which they focused on recycling, carbon emissions and renewable energy. “It is unbelievable to me how much these kids know. Fifteen years ago when I was their age, we were not learning about carbon emissions and global warming in school. It is really amazing to see this kind of progressive learning, and to be part of a company that gives us the freedom to go out and work with children in the community. It's exciting teaching people how to reduce their fuel and energy consumption because it's something we feel so passionate about.”
Joanne Lamprey, President of Lamprey Brothers, says “We are honored that schools throughout the Seacoast are thinking of us, allowing us to visit their classrooms, and have interactive learning sessions with them. In the last year we have had the privilege of visiting a handful of schools; working with children is a really rewarding part of what we do here day-to-day.”
Frede adds, “The kids learned so much that day, and were even left with a goody bag filled with recycled school products. They learned how many different things could be recycled and how important recycling is. But they also got a sense of the bigger picture: by working together, we can reduce our energy consumption, lower our carbon footprint, and help save the environment.”
