Biofuel is derived from plants. In its purest form biofuel is processed by squeezing or pressing plants to extract the oil from their cells. This is B-100 or 100% biofuel; the pulp bi-product is used for such things as animal feed and natural fertilizers.
Pure biofuel will congeal at cooler air temperatures, but if it is mixed with traditional fuel oil congealing will not occur.
Currently equipment manufacturers will warranty heating equipment up to B-5 - fuel comprising 5% biofuel and 95% fuel oil. But even burning B-5 in your conventional heating and hot-water systems will greatly reduce your carbon output. There is no need to alter your equipment in any way to facilitate the change.
Any diesel-engine motor vehicle can operate with B-20 biodiesel; there is no need to alter the engine in any way. All Lamprey Brothers delivery trucks run on B-20 biodiesel, and we are in the process of converting all our service vehicles and cars to diesel, which get better fuel mileage than conventional gasoline vehicles. We have pledged to burn biodiesel in all our vehicles.
